Chapter 7

The Alex situation was weighing heavily enough on her mind that she failed to notice she hadn’t taken her birth control pill for an entire week. As per her usual, she had to tell both of her regular stress relief providers she was off the market.

Glazier had taken the news of her new relationship well. They had their usual brief discussion that she was seeing someone, and he gave her his usual thumbs up. No need to give more details. If the new guy didn’t work out, they’d discuss it while he gave her one of her favorite fake scenarios—fake jealousy.

Marcus had seemed slightly miffed, which made no sense to Stella. They’d hooked up occasionally for a few years. He had to be seeing other people.

Her friends were having their own drama. Steadman was still with Kayla, though she seemed increasingly irritated with him. Eliza finally made a move on the dermatology chief resident. Stella might have told her she needed some P in the V or it was gonna die like an unwatered plant.

It seemed like Angela had broken up with the stockbroker she’d been lying to. The hyper-competent, slightly uptight cardiology fellow had let her date believe she taught elementary school. He must not have been too swift if he didn’t notice. Stella would have blamed his confusion on Angela’s insane curves, except he refused to sleep with her.

Oh well. During the Halloween party, Stella gave her a few shots and put her in a Princess Leia bikini. It must have worked because Angela was getting down and dirty on the dance floor with a masked blue power ranger. Hopefully that paid off, even though Angela never mentioned power ranger or stockbroker again.

Then it all came crashing down.

Right before Veteran’s Day, she stopped by Alex’s office to grab lunch with him between cases. They often ate together, and Eliza had given Stella the go-ahead to invite him over for the family Thanksgiving.

“Hello, honey,” she knocked on the door and came in without waiting. Today, though, Alex was not alone.

“Hi, dear,” Glazier said. He was kneeling on the floor with Alex on a chair. He was refitting Alex with his prosthesis.

Stella found herself unable to speak. Her gaze darted to Alex. Glazier stopped what he was doing as the realization dawned on him.

“Stella?” Alex voiced confusion. He studied Stella’s face, and then she could see the wheels beginning to turn. He slowly rested his eyes on Glazier, who slowly backed away.

“I think that’ll get you through the day till I see you in the office. Provided you haven’t shot and killed me.” Glazier patted Stella on the shoulder on his way out. “Good luck, kiddo.”

A few seconds passed without either of them speaking. Alex was the first to break the silence. “You dated Glazier?”

“I wouldn’t call it ‘dating.’ We’re friends. Occasionally, we used to get together.”

“’Occasionally,’ we used to get together?’ What does that mean?” Alex sounded very odd.

“It means it doesn’t matter. I haven’t been with anybody except you since we slept together in September,” Stella tried to reassure him.
